The Dachau country fair offers comfortable Bavarian hospitality. Join the Dirndl- and Lederhosn-clad locals for some good-humored "oom-pah" music in one of the decorated beer-tents while enjoying a typical regional meal. Toast your table-neighbours with a "zünftige Maß" (1 liter of beer!) and chances are you will soon pick up some Bavarian expressions. Attractions and rides make it a fun experience for the whole family.
The spectacular fireworks Thursday evening after sunset (around 9:30 pm) are one of the highlights each year.
August 15th, a religious holdiday in Bavaria, the historic old town becomes the scene of an international bicycle race, the "Dachauer Bergkriterium".
There is a biennial (uneven years) children's parade in fairy tale costumes the first Sunday during the Volksfest. The starting point is at the corner of Augsburger and Brucker streets. The parade then continues through the historic old town and on to the fair grounds.
The most convenient and safe way to visit the "Dachauer Volksfest" is by using public transportation. Frequent local trains (S2 direction Dachau Bahnhof/Petershausen/Altomünster) connect downtown Munich with Dachau train station within a twenty minutes ride. From the station it is only a ten minutes walk or a quick taxi ride to the fair grounds.
The taxi stand is located in front of the train station.
